Truth Squad

In February this year, Leader of the Democratic Labour Party David Thompson told the Nation Newspaper’s North American editor that he saw no need for a code of conduct to govern platform speakers during a general election campaign.

His exact words were: “ I believe in robust debate. In the election season things are said that sometimes stick and sometime don’t stick.”

We in the Barbados Labour Party also believe in robust debate, but we believe very strongly that high standards of decency must accompany robust debate. However, since the election date was announced last week, it has become abundantly clear that the Dems’ aim is to try to take the government at any cost.

On Saturday morning we had the outrageous charge that National Assistant Board hampers were being diverted from poor people to BLP candidates to support their election campaign.

We had to point out that more than 1,000 hampers had been distributed by the NAB, rather than the hundreds the DLP leader has spoken of, and that candidates from his party had been major beneficiaries, on behalf of their poor constituents, and that St. Lucy incumbent, Denis Kellman had himself collected 30.

One day later the Dems were at it again, charging that a poll published in the Sunday Sun newspaper, showing that Barbadians overwhelmingly supported Owen Arthur for the job of Prime Minister, had been commissioned by the BLP.

Again we, and officials of the University of the West Indies, have been forced to point out the truth — the poll was entirely the initiative of the UWI and they received no funds from outside sources for the poll.

Given this approach by the Dems, we have decided to establish a Truth Squad. Each day the squad will seek out and publish untruths by the Dems, so keep your computers connected to blp.org.bb.

The Truth: Deputy Prime Minister Mia Mottley asked at a Press conference in response:
What about Jordan’s Supermarket, which operates stores in Speightstown, Fitts Village, Baxters Road and Fairchild Street?

Untruth Number 5 from the Dems
Monday January 1: (David Thompson) While addressing a party crowd at Oistins, he alleged that BLP operatives had cut a cable, silencing the show. His exact words were: “I'm a very troubled man tonight because I believe in democracy. And when people could go to the length of sending people in here tonight to cut the wires of our speakers to try and stop this meeting from taking place. And for the young people of this country to stop an outstanding and conscious Jamaican artiste from bringing his message to you, it tells you how desperate the BLP is to hold on to power in this country.”
