NewsIt is not without significance that the reckless charge was made over a bowl of pudding and souse and when one completes the food order with the requisite beverage for which Thompson has become renowned then one sees a clear political pattern of approach by Thompson and the DLP in addressing serious national issues. Barbadians must never forget his naïve and immature suggestion of sitting down over a bowl of cou cou and flying fish to the team negotiating the fishing agreement between Trinidad and Barbados.
It is this kind of cavalier approach to the serious business of politics and the management of the affairs of over 270,000 people that should convince all Barbadians that neither Thompson nor the DLP is ready for the task of leading this country. Politics is not a branch of the entertainment industry but a serious profession where serious people gather to conduct serious business on behalf of a nation. Politics is not the place for Thompson.
In the Sunday Sun of September 30, 2007, Chris Gollop reported Thompson as having said that “he was in possession of information which would suggest there were improper “sweetheart handouts” and “kickbacks” in the Harwood Housing Inc. matter. This is evidence of corruption. There is absolutely no need to employ any forensic investigator, no need to wait on the Public Accounts Committee and most definitely there is no need for the war of words in the media. All that is required is for Thompson to go down to the fraud squad of the Royal Barbados Police Force and present the information which he said he has.
After ten days of empty rhetoric in the press, two and half hours of debate between David Ellis and Pat Hoyos on Brass Tacks Monday and a full debate in the House of Assembly on Tuesday, no mention was made of the information which Thompson said he has or an attempt made to involve the Police in this perceive corruption is grossly unacceptable. It is clear that once again, just as he did with the IMF Secret Deal, Thompson has failed to the come clean with the Barbadian public.
Politics is hard work. Character is tested. Political and intellectual skills are constantly engaged but Thompson intends to exert none of the above. Instead he has calculated that somehow he can win an election based purely on a campaign of charges of corruption without proof. He has somehow convinced himself that the electorate is gullible enough not to see through his scheme.
Thompson’s failure to recognize that his actions as a politician can reflect poorly on the others in the profession is evidence that his dream of leading this country has now become an obsession driven by desperation. The new lows for which Thompson is now being forced can be seen on the Barbados Free Press and the Barbados Underground on a daily basis. The manner in which DLP operatives uses these two blogs to malign this country in the international arena everyday while purporting to be Barbadians suggest a serious character flaw.
This new episode of political jitterbugging by Thompson should not be condoned and we believe that the only way to preserve and protect the credibility of the profession of politician is to ask for the immediate resignation of Thompson.
