NewsSTATEMENT BY HON. TREVOR A PRESCOD, MINISTER OF SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION
David Thompson is once again misleading the public in his claim that intended recipients of the ‘Christmas Barrel Programme,’ managed by the National Assistance Board, were being denied Christmas hampers.
In his usual style, David Thompson has rushed to the media with total disregard for the facts.
The facts are that over one thousand hampers have been distributed to needy people across the length and breadth of Barbados. Six hundred of these were delivered by officers of the National Assistance Board. The remaining four hundred hampers were distributed by NGO’s, pastors, community workers and politicians, including thirty, which were given to Denis Kellman of the Democratic Labour Party for distribution to deserving persons in his constituency.
This gives the lie to David Thompson’s claim that recipients of this programme are chosen based on political persuasion. The ‘Christmas Barrel Programme’ has been in operation for ten years catering to the indigent, senior citizens and the disabled. It is David Thompson who has chosen to embarrass the beneficiaries of this programme now that an election has been called by making them feel as if they are somehow not worthy of receiving the hampers generously donated by their fellow Barbadians.
