NewsHer Majesty will deliver the keynote address at the CHOGM’s opening ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port-of-Spain on November 27.
Prime Minister Patrick Manning, Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni are also scheduled to address the opening ceremony.
This information was disclosed during a Commonwealth Caribbean Business Media Workshop at the Hyatt Regency Hotel last week.
Senior coordinator at the National Secretariat for the CHOGM, Sharifa Ali Abdullah, said the Queen will be paying a state visit to this country in addition to speaking at the opening of the CHOGM in her capacity as titular head of the Commonwealth.
Since Uganda hosted the last CHOGM in 2007, Museveni will speak on what was achieved since then and lay the foundation for Manning who will focus on the objectives of this year’s CHOGM. As secretary general, Sharma will also address the opening ceremony.
Approximately 5,000 delegates from 52 Commonwealth nations will be in Port-of-Spain for the CHOGM. Ali Abdullah said Fiji will not be sending a delegation because it is currently suspended from the Commonwealth while Zimbabwe has withdrawn from the group.
While the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann’s hosted the leaders retreat and signing of the Declaration of Commitment of Port-of-Spain for the Fifth Summit of the Americas on April 19, this will not be the case for the final day of CHOGM on November 29.
