The Democratic Labour Party must not vulgarise the word: “integrity.” When given its literal interpretation, “integrity” means: honest; veracity; reliability; truth or truthfulness.
Two hundred and seventy-seven nine days later this Government arrogantly refuses to implement the 90 and 100 day promises it made. Is that integrity?
A new general hospital
The Health Minister Dr. Estwick told this country that Cabinet had agreed to build a new general
hospital. David Thompson said no – that Cabinet had agreed to refurbish the QEH. You had two
person giving different stories of what the same Cabinet had agreed to - when only one could the
telling Barbadians the truth. Was that integrity?
The IMF secret deal and invisible code of conduct
This is the same David Thompson - who told us about an IMF secret deal! This is the same
Thompson who promised change – but went on national television and told Barbadians that his
Ministers had sign on to a code of conduct. That turned out not to be true! Is that integrity? Does
that sound like a Government you can rely on to tell you the truth?
Ink dry
Barbadians were told that if Mr. Thompson became Prime Minister before the ink was dry on the
BS&T share sale – he would reverse it. Well, he did not!
Millions stashed in foreign bank accounts
Prime Minister Thompson alleged that former BLP operative stashed millions in foreign bank
accounts. In last Sunday’ Sunday Sun of October 5, 2008, we saw a company, which said that
persons who run overseas because of debt – have no place to hide because Barbados has an
arrangement with 50 countries across the globe. Are we to understand that you can find a moving
target (like a person) in any of fifty countries, but cannot find a bank, which is stationary?
Apart from that, Barbados has mutual legal assistance treaties with a number of countries across the globe. Even the Swiss had to relax their bank secretary law consistent with OECD rules. Therefore, was Prime Minister Thompson’s statement truthful when he said that it will be difficult for his Government to go after the alleged millions that are allegedly stashed at banks not yet built and in countries that do not appear on the world map?
Keeping statistics secret
Why would this Government, which promised “accountability” and “freedom of information legislation”
– keep cost of living; unemployment and economic statistics a closely guarded secret from the people
of Barbados?
Empty Treasury
All during the election campaign the ruling party said that “it will not cheat and that it will not lie!”
Doesn’t something sound fishy, that this Government - would one week say that the Treasury is
empty but the following week went to Parliament and transferred $80 million from the Consolidated
Fund or the same empty treasury? What does “transfer” mean? How can you transfer that which
you do not have?
DLP will not borrow
Did the DLP not say while in opposition, that the national debt was too high and that it will not borrow
because it did not want to place a burden on future generation to repay? Are you aware that this
same DLP has gone to borrow $200 million?
Are you aware that Mr. Thompson recently told the United National that one of his priorities is to reduce Barbados’ national and foreign debt? How can he reduce the debt by borrowing more?
Housing
Are you aware that this Government said that it will build 2000 houses this year? Do you realize that
it will not happen?
A&E Department
Did the Health Minister not say that by the end of September, Barbados will have a spanking new A&E
which is homely - with a coffee machine; plants; pictures on the wall and curtains? What month is
this?
ABC highway
Didn’t the Minister of Public Works say that the ABC highway will be completed in time for the start of
the September School term? Has the work been completed? What about the grid lock on the road,
which the DLP said it will fix. The things on the road that are now causing grid lock – are they
vehicles? Are they? Are your sure!?
Price gouging
Would a Government, which is serious about integrity – price gouge Barbadians on petroleum
products? Well the DLP Government does! And you know what else!? The DLP is not satisfied to
price gouge you on petroleum products, it has now turned its attention to land tax.
A barrel of oil on the world market is today some US$36.00 lower than it was when we left office, yet you are being asked to pay more per litre than you did under a BLP Government. Isn’t that price gouging?
